The UNESCO World Heritage Centre and Panasonic have released an online version of the World Heritage Calendar in five languages. It is available as a website, or as a downloadable stand-alone application or wallpaper.
Featuring stunning photographs of 12 World Heritage sites, the calendar includes informative texts and interesting facts in English, Japanese, French, Chinese and Spanish. There is also a game consisting of matching sites with illustrations related to them on a world map. The online version is especially targeted to educating young people, and more content will be added in the near future.
"We are extremely pleased to see this new version of the calendar," said Francesco Bandarin, UNESCO Assistant-Director General for Culture. "Its advanced technology and appealing design is ideal for reaching younger people around the world, and allowing them to learn about heritage sites in an interesting and entertaining way."
The online calendar is a further development of the paper version, which UNESCO and Panasonic have produced together since 1995 in efforts to raise awareness of the importance of World Heritage preservation.
